Ergonomics Tips July 17, 2012

Boost Your Energy! Are you and feeling less energetic at work? Are you glued to your chair and workstation for hours?

Whether because of increased computer usage, intensified demands at the job or mental stress, more people today are finding themselves tired and quickly irritated throughout the day. Take the initiative to recharge your battery and to ENERGIZE.

How to Increase your Energy

A state of tense tiredness is common after:

  • Restless sleep
  • Lack of balanced meals throughout the day
  • Consuming multiple cups of coffee or caffeinated drinks
  • Eating sugary snacks
  • Lack of exercise

Low energy can contribute to negative moods that increase shoulder muscle tension, however, there are steps that you can take to decrease your tension and change your mood including:

  • Starting each day eating a protein-filled breakfast such as whole grain cereals with nuts or a serving of traditional eggs.
  • If your body tells you that you are tired, stop and listen! Take a short walk instead of reaching for a snack or a cup of coffee. A twenty-minute walk will increase your energy and loosen your neck and shoulder muscles.

Breaks are Important

Breaks allow your body to regenerate. Take several breaks during the day to interrupt the low-level chronic tension that develops during computer work.

Try changing positions every 20-30 minutes. Stand up, walk around or just recline the backrest in your chair to lean back from the keyboard and monitor.

Schedule walking meetings at work whenever possible.

Useful Tips on How to Energize

The moment you feel your energy dropping, get up and move. Movement is the quickest way to energize and increase positive mood.

Take a short walk down the office corridor. As you walk, add pep to your step! Smiling will get you moving faster, help you feel lighter and  build energy.

Breath In and Out

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center suggest that deep breaths throughout the day, as well as varying your breathing techniques, can maintain a higher level of energy throughout the day.
